Frequently Asked Questions about The California Wellness Foundation Sabbatical Program

What can I use the sabbatical for?
The California Wellness Foundation (TCWF) Sabbatical Program is designed to allow leaders of nonprofit organizations to take time off to rest and rejuvenate. Unlike academic sabbaticals, there is no expectation that you do research, write a book or take on a new project. Sabbaticals can be used for travel, home improvement, hobbies or just relaxing. It is up to the individual to decide how to use the time.

Will I or my organization have any other obligations to the Foundation, if I am selected to receive the sabbatical?
Yes. If awarded a sabbatical, some basic reporting will be required of you and the organization where you are employed.

Can I take my sabbatical in segments — for example, eight weeks and then four weeks at a later time?
No, the sabbatical must be for a minimum of two or, preferably, three consecutive months.

I work for a very small nonprofit health organization. Am I eligible?
Yes, as long as your organization meets the basic eligibility requirements. Also, your organization must have a strong infrastructure to ensure that its work can carry on in your absence.

My organization is a current TCWF grantee. Am I eligible to apply and receive the sabbatical?
Yes. Individuals representing organizations that are current grantees and who meet the basic eligibility requirements may apply and be selected for the sabbatical.

I am a program director, not an executive director or CEO. Can I apply?
No. Only executive directors or their equivalents may apply.

I applied for TCWF’s Sabbatical Program previously and was not selected. Can I reapply?
Yes. You are welcome to reapply.

Why does the board of my organization have to sign off on the application?
Since this is a grant to your organization, the board has to be aware of, and allow for, the chief executive’s time off and make any other adjustments necessary to ensure that the organization’s work can continue in your absence.

Will I get a $30,000 check for the sabbatical?
No. The award is in the form of a grant to your organization. The money will be disbursed to you by your employer.

Who selects the sabbatical recipients?
TCWF staff will review all of the applicants and make recommendations to the Foundation’s board of directors for approval.

What is the purpose of the $5,000 award to the organization?
This contribution is designed to provide the organization where you are employed with financial support for staff to further develop leadership and management skills. This might include workshops and/or continuing education.

Are there any other requirements or information that will be needed by TCWF to assist in making a decision?
The questions in the application are designed to collect all the information required to make a decision. If further information is needed, the Foundation will contact you.

When will I know if I have been selected to receive a sabbatical?
Sabbatical recipients will be announced in October 2008.
