Gary L. Yates To Discuss Health Care Workforce Diversity at Pat Brown Institute Lecture
Gary L. Yates, TCWF president and CEO, will deliver the 2006 California Agenda Public Policy Lecture of the Edmund G. “Pat” Brown Institute of Public Affairs on May 24 at The City Club in Los Angeles. Yates will speak on “Developing a Diverse Health Care Workforce.” The nonpartisan institute’s lecture series was created to educate and engage California policymakers and decision-makers in important state, regional and local public policy issues. read more

Documentary Video by Skid Row Youth Now On 'Life & Times' Blog
Children talk candidly about exposure to drug usage and violence in a video by two young residents of Skid Row in Los Angeles that can be viewed on the blog of "Life & Times," the KCET-TV public affairs series. The 25-minute documentary, “We're Not Bad Kids," was produced by Social Model Recovery Systems. Zelenne L. Cárdenas, the agency’s director of prevention services, is a 2004 TCWF California Peace Prize awardee. read more
Antitrust Settlement Yields $10 Million in Grant Money for California Nonprofits
The Vitamin Cases Consumer Settlement Fund is soliciting applications from eligible nonprofit organizations and public agencies for grants to improve the health and nutrition of California consumers, to advance nutrition, dietary or agricultural science, or to promote antitrust enforcement. Grants totaling approximately $10 million are being made available as part of an antitrust settlement with vitamin manufacturers. Cover the Uninsured Week is May 1-7
Organizations across the country will mark Cover the Uninsured Week (CTUW), May 1-7, with news conferences, civic meetings and health fairs. According to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, which established the observance in 2003, more than 6 million Californians are uninsured. Visit the CTUW website to access resources and information about events in California. Insure the Uninsured Project, a TCWF grantee, is another source for reports on health coverage for California’s uninsured. read more
Youth Radio Nominated for Two Webby Awards
Youth Radio has been nominated for two awards in the Podcast and Radio Website categories of the Webby Awards, the leading international honor for websites. Winners will be announced May 9, and the awards will be presented June 12 at the 10th Annual Webby Awards in New York. TCWF partnered with Berkeley-based Youth Radio in 2005 to help pioneer its podcasts. This is the first year the Internet broadcast medium is recognized as an awards category. read more

“Medicare Forum: Making Sense of Part D,” a half-hour television program broadcasting on PBS stations throughout the state, addresses essential and commonly asked questions about this new and complex drug benefit. Made possible by a grant from the California HealthCare Foundation, the program features Medicare experts from the Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program of the California Department of Aging, and California Health Advocates, a TCWF grantee. TCWF Board Member Named 'Woman of the Year' by Assemblywoman Chan
Barbara C. Staggers, M.D., a TCWF Board member, has been named “Woman of the Year” for the 16th Assembly District by California State Assemblywoman Wilma Chan. Dr. Staggers is director of the Adolescent Medicine division at Children’s Hospital & Research Center Oakland and a national authority on high-risk health behaviors of urban and minority youth. A notable woman is chosen annually from each of California’s Assembly districts to commemorate Women’s History Month. read more
Pacoima Beautiful Featured in Grist ‘Poverty and the Environment’ Series
Marlene Grossman, executive director of Pacoima Beautiful, leads a virtual walking tour of the predominantly Latino Los Angeles neighborhood in Grist, an online environmental news magazine. Part of the magazine’s “Poverty & the Environment” series, the segment describes how the organization, a TCWF grantee, is helping residents of the northeast San Fernando Valley community clean up an environment contaminated by lead paint and by air pollution from freeway traffic, landfills, chemical and power plants, and heavy industry. read more
