Effective Philanthropy Co-Author to Discuss New Book at HIP Event in L.A.

The Southern California chapter of Hispanics in Philanthropy will host a talk by Mary Ellen S. Capek on her groundbreaking study, Effective Philanthropy: Organizational Success through Deep Diversity and Gender Equality. The evening of networking and sharing will also include a discussion by local foundation leaders of ways that grantmaking institutions can incorporate “deep diversity.” The event will be held May 22 at the Center for Healthy Communities in Los Angeles.

Kraft Cares Requests Proposals for Healthy Lifestyle Program

Kraft Cares, a philanthropic program of Kraft Foods, requests proposals for its Salsa, Sabor y Salud Healthy Lifestyles program. The culturally-based program for Latino families with children 12 and under, designed in cooperation with the National Latino Children's Institute, is intended to promote awareness of fitness and nutrition issues, increase children's level of physical activity and improve eating habits. Nonprofit organizations serving Latino families in Los Angeles are eligible to apply. The application deadline is May 19.

Documentary Video by Skid Row Youth Now On 'Life & Times' Blog

Children talk candidly about exposure to drug usage and violence in a video by two young residents of Skid Row in Los Angeles that can be viewed on the blog of "Life & Times," the KCET-TV public affairs series. The 25-minute documentary, “We're Not Bad Kids," was produced by Social Model Recovery Systems. Zelenne L. Cárdenas, the agency’s director of prevention services, is a 2004 TCWF California Peace Prize awardee.

Spring 2006 Issue of Portfolio Now Available

The cover story in the latest issue of Portfolio describes how TCWF core operating support grants—which help underwrite day-to-day administrative and overhead costs—enable organizations in Central and Southern California to sustain the level and quality of health care services for underserved communities. This issue also spotlights the work of grantees in three of our funding priorities: diversity in the health professions, healthy aging and women’s health.

Health Affairs Article by TCWF Directors Examines Value of Retreats for Health Advocates

Ruth Brousseau, TCWF director of evaluation and organizational learning, and Ruth Holton-Hodson, director of public policy, have co-authored “Strengthening A State’s Health Advocacy Infrastructure,” published in the May/June issue of Health Affairs. The report evaluates the effectiveness of TCWF’s two-day retreats for health advocates in providing an opportunity for strategic planning, strengthening participants’ relationships with one another and identifying potential new collaborations. 'Investing in Leadership' Is Topic of Northern California Grantmakers Workshop

Kathleen Enright, executive director of Grantmakers for Effective Organizations, will lead an interactive session on "Investing in Leadership" on May 25 at the San Francisco office of The California Endowment. The free event is sponsored by Northern California Grantmakers and open only to members.

May is Mental Health Month

“Mind Your Health” is the theme of the 50th annual Mental Health Month, observed in May. This year’s message emphasizes the connection between mental and physical well-being. The National Mental Health Association website provides fact sheets, practical tips, a media guide and activity ideas. Information on childhood depression, stress in the workplace and coping with aging parents is also available.

Social Justice Philanthropy Is Topic of EPIP-LA Event in Los Angeles

"Conversations with Changemakers II," hosted by the Los Angeles chapter of Emerging Practitioners in Philanthropy (EPIP-LA), will feature a discussion of social justice philanthropy led by Rachel Levin, associate director of The Righteous Persons Foundation. She will draw upon her diverse experiences in philanthropy, politics and the Jewish community. The free event will be held May 22 at the Center for Healthy Communities in Los Angeles.

Gary L. Yates To Discuss Health Care Workforce Diversity at Pat Brown Institute Lecture

Gary L. Yates, TCWF president and CEO, will deliver the 2006 California Agenda Public Policy Lecture of the Edmund G. “Pat” Brown Institute of Public Affairs on May 24 at The City Club in Los Angeles. Yates will speak on “Developing a Diverse Health Care Workforce.” The nonpartisan institute’s lecture series was created to educate and engage California policymakers and decision-makers in important state, regional and local public policy issues.
