New Study Reports Drop in Teen Birth Rate in California

"No Time for Complacency: Teen Births in California," a study by the Public Health Institute of California (PHI), finds that the teen birth rate in California—while still high—has dropped from 47.7 per 1,000 in 2000 to 39.7 in 2004. For more than a decade, California has had the largest decline in teen birth rates in the nation. The study, funded in part by a grant from TCWF, partly attributes the decline to the state's unprecedented investment in teen pregnancy prevention programs.

The 19th annual Nonprofit Day Conference on July 11 in San Francisco includes workshops on topics that include advocacy, fundraising, investing, leadership, marketing and web development. The event, sponsored by CompassPoint Nonprofit Services and Chevron, gives nonprofit organization employees the chance to network and learn about important and timely issues.

Arc Ecology Director Criticizes Relocation of Toxic Military Ships

Saul Bloom, executive director of Arc Ecology, comments on the hazards of relocating a military fleet of obsolete ships to a Texas scrapping yard in a Herald.com article. Many of the ships, currently anchored in Suisun Bay, in central California, contain hazardous materials such as asbestos, PCBs, lead paint, mercury, chromates, toxic tin and arsenic. Arc Ecology, a TCWF grantee, is a San Francisco-based grassroots environmental organization.

Long-Term Study Finds Strong Demand in Health Care Workforce in California

“Keeping California's Edge: The Growing Demand for Highly Educated Workers” cites health care as one of three industries in California that will require the greatest numbers of associate or bachelor’s degrees or higher in 2022. The long-term study—commissioned by the Campaign for College Opportunity and the California Business Roundtable, and funded in part by a grant from TCWF—finds that health care will be more dependent on California community colleges and similar private institutions than any other industry.

Calexico New River Committee Featured on PBS Broadcast

TCWF grantee Calexico New River Committee —a grassroots organization dedicated to enclosing and cleaning the most polluted river in North America— was featured on the June 2 broadcast of "California Connected" on PBS. “Troubled Waters,” which can be viewed online, shows the effects of the New River’s raw sewage and industrial waste on the health of the border community of Calexico, California. The river is the focus of a California Environmental Protection Agency pilot project.

2006 Champions of Health Professions Diversity Award Presented to Three Leaders

TCWF presented its fourth annual Champions of Health Professions Diversity Award to three leaders who have pioneered programs and policies to increase diversity within the medical professions. The honorees are Dr. José A. Arévalo of Sacramento, Dr. Rolland C. Lowe of San Francisco and Patricia Pratt of Los Angeles. Each received a $25,000 grant in recognition of his or her work and achievements at an awards ceremony in San Francisco on Monday, June 12, 2006.

Featuring more than 60 workshops and sessions, the event is designed for advanced practitioners—nonprofit consultants, service providers, grantmakers and researchers. The conference will focus on collaboration, nonprofit leadership, and ways to foster greater connectivity and power among nonprofit organizations at local, state and national levels.
