TCWF Grantees Receive 2006 Espíritu Award from The Isabel Allende Foundation
The Isabel Allende Foundation has bestowed its $20,000 Espíritu Award on two San Francisco-based TCWF grantees. The award recognizes programs that help protect the fundamental rights of women. Huckleberry Youth Programs was honored for its efforts in teenage pregnancy prevention; Mujeres Unidas y Activas, for promoting social justice for immigrant women.

Community-Based Approaches to Violence Prevention Are Focus of Northern California Grantmakers Briefing
"Alternatives Rising: The New Landscape of Violence Prevention and Intervention" will be the subject of a lunchtime discussion hosted by Northern California Grantmakers (NCG) on August 17 in San Francisco. The program, open only to NCG members, focuses on recent shifts towards community-based intervention and “restorative justice” as alternatives to the criminal justice system. read more

Commonwealth Club to Host Forum on Micro-Pollution
“Micro-Pollution: A Closer Look at How Communities are Impacted by Industrial Activities” is the topic of an August 9 panel discussion at the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco, co-sponsored by TCWF. The panelists—who include TCWF grantees Meena Palaniappan of The Pacific Institute and Bradley Angel of Greenaction — will discuss the effects of pollution from power plants, diesel trucks and oil refineries on underserved communities. read more
Legal Victory Removes Lead From Imported Candy, Ending Threat to Children’s Health
Oakland-based Center for Environmental Health and San Diego-based Environmental Health Coalition, both TCWF grantees, were part of a coalition of health advocates and government agencies that won a landmark legal victory in late June to remove lead from imported Mexican candies containing unwashed chilies. Candy makers, including subsidiaries of Mars and Hershey, agreed to annual audits of their companies and their chili suppliers, lead testing and payment of nearly $1 million for public outreach and to reduce lead industry-wide. read more
Grassroots Group Wins Lawsuit Targeting Housing Construction in Heavily Polluted Area of Riverside County
The grassroots organization Center for Community Action and Environmental Justice (CCAEJ), a TCWF grantee, has won its lawsuit against Riverside County to suspend construction of a 425-unit housing development in Mira Loma, near warehouses with major diesel truck traffic. The county is said to have the nation’s highest level of air pollution, primarily from soot particles in diesel exhaust that can cause respiratory disorders and lung cancer. To raise awareness of the issue, CCAEJ erected a billboard along Highway 60. read more

The Terrance Keenan Leadership Award honors outstanding individuals in health philanthropy whose work is distinguished by leadership, innovation and achievement. Scholarship and Loan Repayment Applications Available
The Health Professions Education Foundation, a TCWF grantee, invites nursing and allied health care students and graduates to apply for scholarship and loan repayment programs. The foundation was established to improve health care in underserved areas of California and enable underrepresented and economically disadvantaged individuals to pursue health careers while practicing in these communities for one or two years. read more
