GIH To Offer Health Grantmaking Workshops in Los Angeles
Grantmakers in Health will present “The Art & Science of Health Grantmaking” on September 18-19 at the Center for Healthy Communities in Los Angeles. Basic and advanced workshops in governance, finance and investments, grantmaking, evaluation and communications will include two sessions led by TCWF executive staff. Magdalena Beltrán-del Olmo, vice president of communications, will discuss working with journalists. Cristina M. Regalado, vice president of programs, will discuss the ways personal styles shape grantmaking styles. read more
Grantmakers for Children, Youth and Families Conference Set for September 24-27 in Los Angeles
“Healthy Communities: Strengthening Prospects for the Well-Being of Children, Youth and Families” is the theme of Grantmakers for Children, Youth and Families 21st Annual Conference, to be held September 24-27 in Los Angeles. Session topics include new developments in child and adolescent neuroscience, family homelessness, improving access to health care, interfaith community organizing, collaborative funding strategies and public/private partnerships. Five offsite sessions will be offered in Los Angeles and West Long Beach neighborhoods. read more
Three Elected Officials Receive TCWF Public Policy Leadership Award
TCWF presented its 2006 Public Policy Leadership Award to Attorney General Bill Lockyer and Senators Martha Escutia and Jackie Speier at a ceremony in Sacramento on August 9. The award, restricted to officials in their final term, honors their support of public policies that promote the health of underserved Californians. read more

New Statewide Survey Reveals Similarities and Differences in Cultural Attitudes Toward Teen Sexuality
According to a recent Field Poll, California's ethnically diverse populations share many of the same opinions about teen sexuality and pregnancy prevention. For example, all ethnic groups consider parents to be the most important influence on teens' attitudes and behaviors. On the other hand, attitudes toward certain issues—including sex education in public schools—vary by ethnic group. Commissioned by the Get Real About Teen Pregnancy public education campaign, funded by TCWF, the survey is intended to aid the development of culturally sensitive prevention strategies. read more
Health Care Advocates Speak Out in Support of Prescription Drug Discounts for the Uninsured
Lupe Alonzo-Diaz, executive director of the Latino Coalition for a Healthy California, a TCWF grantee, and Emily Clayton, a health care advocate with CalPIRG, a statewide public-interest advocacy group, have published the op-ed, "Make Affordable Medicine the Law." The article, which appears in the August 24 edition of the San Francisco Chronicle, advocates for legislation to establish a drug discount program that would benefit California's 6 million uninsured residents. read more
2006 AAPI Health Summit To Be Held September 14-16 in San Jose
The Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Health Summit, scheduled for September 14-16 in San Jose, will convene health care consumers, professionals, advocates, researchers and policymakers to discuss health care access and disparities. Hosted by the Asian & Pacific Islander American Health Forum, a TCWF grantee, the event marks the 20th anniversary of the organization, which works to improve the health and well-being of AAPI communities. read more
New Report Offers Health Aging Strategies for Communities
“A Healthy Community Perspective on Aging Well: New Ideas for an Older California,” a new publication from the Center for Civic Partnerships, presents promising practices and resources that communities can use to improve the health and quality of life of older adults. Funded by a grant from TCWF, this brief report includes demographic projections, six case studies and 35 strategies that can cities can begin to implement immediately. read more

New Survey Provides Detailed Picture of Californians’ Health and Access to Care
Despite issues such as lack of health insurance, most Californians describe their health as “good” or better, according to findings from the latest biannual California Health Interview Survey (CHIS). The extensive report also reveals that the burden of chronic disease in California still falls disproportionately on low-income individuals and certain racial/ethnic groups. CHIS is a collaborative project of two TCWF grantees, UCLA Center for Health Policy Research and the Public Health Institute, and the California Department of Health Services. read more
