Forum To Present Lessons Learned in Public Health Resource-Sharing

Public health regionalization—the practice of sharing resources across city, county and state lines—is the topic of a September 21 forum at the State Capitol in Sacramento. Organized by the California Health Policy Forum of the nonpartisan Center for Health Improvement, the session will present the experiences of four states that have used approaches such as standardization and centralization to develop regional public health capacity. Types of services that best lend themselves to regionalization will be identified. Reservations are recommended.

Summer 2007 Issue of Portfolio Now Available

The cover story in the latest issue of Portfolio focuses on TCWF's strategy of making grants to community foundations that "re-grant" the funds to community-based organizations. These entities are especially well-positioned to assess health care gaps, supply technical assistance and draw upon long-established relations with local stakeholders. This issue of Portfolio also spotlights the work of grantees in two of the Foundation’s eight priority areas—diversity in the health professions and women’s health.

2006 TCWF Annual Report Available Online

The cover story of the 2006 TCWF Annual Report illustrates how conferences that bring together grantees and others committed to addressing specific health issues can build skills, increase participants’ knowledge and enable them to discover unexpected allies. As always, the Annual Report also provides an update on the Foundation’s activities for the year, an overview of the grants program, a list of the year’s grants and financial statements.

TCWF’s Teen Pregnancy Prevention Initiative Evaluated

A new report presents findings from a comprehensive program evaluation of TCWF’s 10-year, $60-million Teenage Pregnancy Prevention Initiative (TPPI). The evaluation assesses TPPI’s eight programs: community action, community access, community support, leadership recognition, policy advocacy, professional development, public education and research. For each program, the report describes grantee activities, implementation lessons learned and outcomes achieved. Conducted by Philliber Research Associates, SRI International and University of California, San Francisco, the report also includes lessons learned from the overall evaluation and a discussion of sustainability issues. Report Shares Best Practices of Health Organizations Serving Farmworkers

Farmworker Health Services, a TCWF grantee, has released its annual “Innovative Outreach Practices Report,” which showcases best practices of health organizations nationwide that serve farmworkers. More than two dozen areas are covered, including cultural competency, community, government, grower and university collaboration; health screening; needs assessments; and professional development. Among the featured organizations is TCWF grantee Clinica Sierra Vista, a comprehensive migrant/community health center system serving Kern and Inyo counties.

Health Pavilion Exhibitors Sought for Black Business Expo 2007

black expo A health pavilion, co-hosted by the L.A. Watts Times and Watts Healthcare, will be part of Black Business Expo 2007 at the Los Angeles Convention Center, September 21-23. The pavilion will serve as a resource center for information on major health conditions adversely affecting the African-American community. The deadline to reserve exhibitor space is September 7. Prisons and Punishment Are Topics of Online Debate

In early August, Barry Krisberg, president of the National Council on Crime and Delinquency—a TCWF grantee—and Mike Reynolds, who helped draft California’s "Three Strikes and You’re Out" law, debated issues relating to prisons and punishment in California on latimes.com. Krisberg and Reynolds took on topics that range from prison overcrowding to mandatory’sentencing laws. The five debates are available online.

3,500 Californians Speak Out at Health Care Reform Event

On August 11, nearly 3,500 Californians in eight cities linked by satellite discussed proposals for reforming the state health care system. Top priorities of participants in CaliforniaSpeaks — determined by an electronic vote — were making health care affordable and accessible to all, and "putting people before profits." Participating legislators included Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Assembly Speaker Fabian Núñez, Senate President pro tem Don Perata and Assembly Republican Leader Mike Villines. The nonpartisan event, a project of AmericaSpeaks, was funded by grants from TCWF, The California Endowment and Blue Shield of California Foundation.
