Kwoh Receives State Bar’s Highest Honor
TCWF Board member Stewart Kwoh received the State Bar of California’s Loren Miller Legal Services Award. The recognition is presented to an attorney who demonstrates long-term commitment and work in extending legal services to the poor. Kwoh founded the Asian Pacific American Legal Center of Los Angeles in 1983. As its only executive director since then, Kwoh has guided its growth over the years. The center, now with 60 full-time staff and 700 volunteers, has handled tens of thousands of cases since its founding. read more
Forum on Immigrant Health
TCWF is sponsoring the Commonwealth Club’s event “Immigrant Health Care: Present Challenges and Future Solutions” on December 10, 2007. Known for providing thoughtful forums for impartial discussion of public issues, the San Francisco-based nonprofit organization will host a panel that will include Assembly Speaker Fabian Nuñez; Jane Garcia, CEO of Clinica de la Raza; Martin Martinez, policy analyst of California Pan Ethnic Health Network; and Alice Chen, M.D., Medical Director, General Medicine Clinic, San Francisco General Hospital. read more
2007 California Peace Prize
Casey Gwinn of San Diego, Patricia Lee of San Francisco and Cora Tomalinas of San Jose received the 2007 California Peace Prize at a recognition ceremony in San Francisco on November 14. In honor of their commitment to preventing violence and promoting peace in their communities, each received a $25,000 cash award. These individuals are representative of thousands working throughout the state to prevent violence against youth. Each has offered practical, proven examples of how to build healthy communities and prevent violence. TCWF recognizes these leaders for making California a healthier and safer place to live. read more
Grantee Named Young Executive Director of the Year
Women’s Community Clinic’s Carlina Hansen received the Young Executive Director of the Year recognition from the Young Nonprofit Professionals Network. Under Hansen’s leadership, the Women's Community Clinic has expanded its capacity to improve the health and well-being of women and girls in San Francisco. During her seven-year tenure as executive director, the Clinic has grown from a budget of $150,000 and one staff person to a budget of $1 million with 14 staff and more than a hundred active volunteers. read more
Grantees Recognized for Compassion in Action
Michael Green of Center for Environmental Health and Glide Memorial Church were recognized with the Compassion in Action Award from The Missing Peace in San Francisco on November 29. The Compassion in Action Award is given to individuals and organizations who embody pure motivation and compassionate concern for the well-being of others, world peace, ecology, and global responsibility. read more
Bilingual Guide to Health Programs
The California Healthcare Foundation has published a guide in both English and Spanish that provides basic information on health insurance, nutrition, and other public programs. The “Guide to Health Programs” is free and includes eligibility criteria and information on how to apply. While the guide is useful to those in need of insurance, it is also designed to be a resource to help health care workers and community-based organizations in their outreach to the community. read more

LA County Helps
A new website has been launched to help anyone in Los Angeles County in need of public services such as child care, health services, food stamps or general relief, social security information, housing, consumer protection and more. The website is LACountyHelps.org. It offers information about what services are available, where they are located, how to apply and includes a brief, anonymous, self-screening eligibility questionnaire. read more

Fred Bauermeister of the Free Clinic of Simi Valley; Maria Costello of the Crossroads Foundation in San Diego; Rufino Dominguez of Centro Binacional Para el Desarrollo Indígena Oaxaqueño in Fresno; April Lea Go Forth of Resources for Indian Student Education, Inc., in Alturas; Marsha Krouse-Taylor of Casa de Esperanza, Inc., in Yuba City; Penny Newman of the Center for Community Action and Environmental Justice in Riverside; William “Blinky” Rodriguez of Communities in Schools of San Fernando Valley, Inc.; and Mary Szecsey of West County Health Centers, Inc., in Guerneville received the 2007 Sabbatical Program recognition. The program provides each organization with a $35,000 grant to cover their leader’s salary and expenses during the sabbatical. read more
