Communications and Grants Program Staff Appointments

ca_votersTCWF announced the appointments of Adriana Godoy Leiss as communications officer and Julio Marcial as program director. Formerly a communications associate with the Foundation, Leiss’ new role includes serving as editor of the Portfolio newsletter and coordinating news media relations. Marcial brings nearly 10 years of experience with TCWF—most recently as communications officer— to his new position. As program director, Marcial is responsible for reviewing letters of interest and grant proposals and for making funding recommendations related to the issues of teenage pregnancy and violence prevention.

Grantees Recognized for Compassion in Action

ca_votersMichael Green of Center for Environmental Health and Glide Memorial Church were recognized with the Compassion in Action Award from The Missing Peace in San Francisco on November 29. The Compassion in Action Award is given to individuals and organizations who embody pure motivation and compassionate concern for the well-being of others, world peace, ecology, and global responsibility.

2007 California Peace Prize

ca_votersCasey Gwinn of San Diego, Patricia Lee of San Francisco and Cora Tomalinas of San Jose received the 2007 California Peace Prize at a recognition ceremony in San Francisco on November 14. In honor of their commitment to preventing violence and promoting peace in their communities, each received a $25,000 cash award. These individuals are representative of thousands working throughout the state to prevent violence against youth. Each has offered practical, proven examples of how to build healthy communities and prevent violence. TCWF recognizes these leaders for making California a healthier and safer place to live.

IRS Offers Nonprofit Tax Compliance Web-Workshop

nonprofit_sectorThe Internal Revenue Service is now offering an online version of its Exempt Organizations Workshop covering tax compliance issues confronting small and mid-sized 501(c)(3) organizations. Topics covered include: keeping tax-exempt status; unrelated business income; employment issues; form 990 and required disclosures.

Kwoh Receives State Bar's Highest Honor

nonprofit_sectorKwoh Receives State Bar’s Highest Honor
TCWF Board member Stewart Kwoh received the State Bar of California’s Loren Miller Legal Services Award. The recognition is presented to an attorney who demonstrates long-term commitment and work in extending legal services to the poor. Kwoh founded the Asian Pacific American Legal Center of Los Angeles in 1983. As its only executive director since then, Kwoh has guided its growth over the years. The center, now with 60 full-time staff and 700 volunteers, has handled tens of thousands of cases since its founding.

Bilingual Guide to Health Programs

ca_votersThe California Healthcare Foundation has published a guide in both English and Spanish that provides basic information on health insurance, nutrition, and other public programs. The “Guide to Health Programs” is free and includes eligibility criteria and information on how to apply. While the guide is useful to those in need of insurance, it is also designed to be a resource to help health care workers and community-based organizations in their outreach to the community.

LA County Helps

ca_votersA new website has been launched to help anyone in Los Angeles County in need of public services such as child care, health services, food stamps or general relief, social security information, housing, consumer protection and more. The website is LACountyHelps.org. It offers information about what services are available, where they are located, how to apply and includes a brief, anonymous, self-screening eligibility questionnaire.

Current Snapshot of California’s Safety Net

ca_votersThe California Primary Care Association’s “The Future of Community Clinics and Health Centers in California’s Safety Net: A Blueprint For Action” provides an account of key accomplishments, challenges and gaps to California’s health care safety net. Key informant interviews and survey responses from safety net clinics throughout the state provide a detailed picture of the system of public hospitals, community clinics and health centers that care for the uninsured and other vulnerable populations.
