Teensource.org Links Sexually-Active Youth To Health Care

nonprofit_sectorCalifornia Family Health Council, Inc. created teensource.org to provide teens with online help in finding correct information on sexual health. Designed to empower youth to protect themselves from sexually transmitted diseases and unintended pregnancies, website visitors can locate local teen-friendly clinics, get answers to questions, hear from other teens in recorded interviews, watch streaming videos and take a virtual clinic tour.

Current Snapshot of California’s Safety Net

ca_votersThe California Primary Care Association’s “The Future of Community Clinics and Health Centers in California’s Safety Net: A Blueprint For Action” provides an account of key accomplishments, challenges and gaps to California’s health care safety net. Key informant interviews and survey responses from safety net clinics throughout the state provide a detailed picture of the system of public hospitals, community clinics and health centers that care for the uninsured and other vulnerable populations.

TCWF Sabbatical Honoree Fatally Shot

ca_votersTCWF Sabbatical honoree Pheng Lo of Lao Family Community was shot and killed outside the organization’s front doors after work on December 20, 2007. Lo received the TCWF Sabbatical Award in 2006 in recognition for his dedication to providing health and social services to refugees in California’s Central Valley. A Hmong refugee himself, Pheng Lo began working for nonprofit organizations in the early 1980’s and joined Lao Family Community (LFC) in 1986. Under Lo’s leadership, LFC has been able to build strong relationships with local officials to help improve health and social service delivery systems to better address the needs of immigrants.

LA County Helps

ca_votersA new website has been launched to help anyone in Los Angeles County in need of public services such as child care, health services, food stamps or general relief, social security information, housing, consumer protection and more. The website is LACountyHelps.org. It offers information about what services are available, where they are located, how to apply and includes a brief, anonymous, self-screening eligibility questionnaire.

Home Visit Program for New Moms in Kern County

ca_votersNurse Week Magazine featured an article on the Nurse-Family Partnership home visitation program for new mothers. The program, funded in part by TCWF, is built on evidence that public health nurse visits to new moms improve the health, well-being and self-sufficiency of low-income, first-time parents and their children. The program is a good fit for high-risk moms in Kern County, where the median age for mothers is 18, with 47 percent younger than 18.

IRS Offers Nonprofit Tax Compliance Web-Workshop

nonprofit_sectorThe Internal Revenue Service is now offering an online version of its Exempt Organizations Workshop covering tax compliance issues confronting small and mid-sized 501(c)(3) organizations. Topics covered include: keeping tax-exempt status; unrelated business income; employment issues; form 990 and required disclosures.

Bilingual Guide to Health Programs

ca_votersThe California Healthcare Foundation has published a guide in both English and Spanish that provides basic information on health insurance, nutrition, and other public programs. The “Guide to Health Programs” is free and includes eligibility criteria and information on how to apply. While the guide is useful to those in need of insurance, it is also designed to be a resource to help health care workers and community-based organizations in their outreach to the community.

Grantseekers Guidance Available Online

ca_voters“A Grant Seekers Handbook: A Guide To Finding Funds” was developed to help nonprofit organizations build fundraising capacity through the use of careful research and planning prior to submitting proposals to funders. The instructive manual was developed by The California Community Foundation and author Harvey Chess for the Center, which is located in Southern California. The well-used and trusted handbook is now available to nonprofit organizations throughout the state online.
