The Board of Directors of The California Wellness Foundation (TCWF) announced the appointment of A. Eugene Washington, M.D. Washington is executive vice chancellor and provost of the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), and serves as professor of gynecology, epidemiology and health policy at UCSF's School of Medicine. He is co-founder of the university's Medical Effectiveness Research Center for Diverse Populations, for which he was director from 1993 to 2005; and also co-founded the UCSF-Stanford Evidence-based Practice Center, which he led from 1997 to 2002. read more
2008 Sabbatical Program Applications Available Now
The California Wellness Foundation’s Sabbatical Program Awards provide grants to health-focused nonprofits to provide their chief executives with well-deserved sabbaticals. Deadline is February 27. The program was created to improve the nonprofits’ long-term effectiveness by providing their executives with the rest they need to continue to direct their organizations' missions. In addition to providing funding to cover the executives’ paid leave of up to six months, funding is also awarded to each organization for the professional development of managers and staff who assume extra responsibilities during the absence of the sabbatical awardees. read more

California Family Health Council, Inc. created teensource.org to provide teens with online help in finding correct information on sexual health. Designed to empower youth to protect themselves from sexually transmitted diseases and unintended pregnancies, website visitors can locate local teen-friendly clinics, get answers to questions, hear from other teens in recorded interviews, watch streaming videos and take a virtual clinic tour. read more

The California Primary Care Association’s “The Future of Community Clinics and Health Centers in California’s Safety Net: A Blueprint For Action” provides an account of key accomplishments, challenges and gaps to California’s health care safety net. Key informant interviews and survey responses from safety net clinics throughout the state provide a detailed picture of the system of public hospitals, community clinics and health centers that care for the uninsured and other vulnerable populations. read more

Sandra Martínez, program director of The California Wellness Foundation, has been appointed to the Board of Directors of Grantmakers Concerned with Immigrants and Refugees (GCIR). Independent Sector seeks nominations to identify an outstanding nonprofit to receive the 2008 American Express Building Leadership Award. The award recognizes an organization that exemplifies a culture of investing in the people of the nonprofit community through the development of staff, board, and volunteer leadership. The Internal Revenue Service is now offering an online version of its Exempt Organizations Workshop covering tax compliance issues confronting small and mid-sized 501(c)(3) organizations. Bilingual Guide to Health Programs
The California Healthcare Foundation has published a guide in both English and Spanish that provides basic information on health insurance, nutrition, and other public programs. The “Guide to Health Programs” is free and includes eligibility criteria and information on how to apply. While the guide is useful to those in need of insurance, it is also designed to be a resource to help health care workers and community-based organizations in their outreach to the community. read more
