Violence Prevention Panels at Criminal Justice Conference
TCWF funded panels at USC Annenberg Institute for Justice and Journalism’s Criminal Justice Conference that addressed, among other issues, preventing violence against youth. TCWF former California Peace Prize honorees Connie Rice and Bo Taylor were both featured speakers. The conference, “A 21st Century Criminal Justice System for Los Angeles: A Look at the Present, a Model for the Future and a Blueprint for Media Coverage,” brought providers, policymakers, law enforcement and other opinion leaders together on January 22-24 at USC. Venice Family Clinic Featured In PBS Broadcast
PBS’ "Nightly Business Report” featured a story on California’s health care on January 30. The report examined the issue from many perspectives and featured a TCWF grantee, Venice Family Clinic—"the largest free clinic in the nation." The Report’s Washington Bureau Chief, Darren Gersh, interviewed the Clinic's CEO, Elizabeth Forer. read more
2008 Sabbatical Program Applications Available Now
The California Wellness Foundation’s Sabbatical Program Awards provide grants to health-focused nonprofits to provide their chief executives with well-deserved sabbaticals. Deadline is February 27. The program was created to improve the nonprofits’ long-term effectiveness by providing their executives with the rest they need to continue to direct their organizations' missions. In addition to providing funding to cover the executives’ paid leave of up to six months, funding is also awarded to each organization for the professional development of managers and staff who assume extra responsibilities during the absence of the sabbatical awardees. read more
The latest edition of Portfolio describes efforts by Khmer Girls in Action’s to develop teenage health leaders. The organization brings together Southeast Asian young women, ages 14 to 21, for monthly forums in which they may freely discuss sex and partner issues — topics often too culturally taboo to discuss with their parents. The peer-to-peer open discussions and accompanying mentoring provide opportunities for the young women to become health education leaders as they learn to dispel common myths that can lead to risky sexual behavior. read more
New TCWF Board Member Appointed
The Board of Directors of The California Wellness Foundation (TCWF) announced the appointment of A. Eugene Washington, M.D. Washington is executive vice chancellor and provost of the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), and serves as professor of gynecology, epidemiology and health policy at UCSF's School of Medicine. He is co-founder of the university's Medical Effectiveness Research Center for Diverse Populations, for which he was director from 1993 to 2005; and also co-founded the UCSF-Stanford Evidence-based Practice Center, which he led from 1997 to 2002. read more
Sandra Martínez Joins GCIR Board
Sandra Martínez, program director of The California Wellness Foundation, has been appointed to the Board of Directors of Grantmakers Concerned with Immigrants and Refugees (GCIR). GCIR is a growing network of foundations working on a wide range of immigration and immigrant integration issues. Its mission is to influence the philanthropic field to advance the contributions and address the needs of the world's growing and increasingly diverse immigrant and refugee populations. read more

“Reflections on Leadership Recognition—TCWF’s Champions of Health Professions Diversity Award” is available online. Since debuting in 2003, this award has honored 15 outstanding individuals who have made significant strides toward developing a health-care workforce that more closely reflects the ethnic and cultural profile of California’s population. The prizes – and the accompanying communications strategy – honor the work of the awardees and raise their profiles across the state. read more
