“Growing up, getting an education was my mission,” Marcial said. “I loved to learn, and that helped me earn a full academic scholarship to UCLA.”

One of six children, Marcial was the first in his family to attend college. After two years at UCLA, he transferred to the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). While attending UCSB, Marcial participated in the National Television Violence Study, which was partially funded by TCWF and administered by Mediascope. This experience piqued his interest in social issues, which he integrated into his educational and career choices.

In the summer before his senior year, Marcial was a junior market research analyst as part of a fellowship to the H.H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies at the University of Michigan. The program is designed to encourage and prepare participants from traditionally underrepresented ethnic groups to pursue graduate studies. While in this program, Marcial presented research regarding the overrepresentation of minorities in the juvenile justice system at convenings in the Midwest and Canada.

Marcial graduated from UCSB with honors, receiving a B.A. in Sociology of Mass Communications.

“My education did so much for me. It really broadened my horizons,” Marcial said.

Following graduation, he worked for a year at the Montecito Bank & Trust as a community relations representative before accepting a position as communications clerk at TCWF in 1998.

“I was attracted to the Foundation because of its work in violence prevention and other issues affecting the underserved,” Marcial said. “TCWF has a history of being willing to engage in dialogue on issues that have been silent for too long.”

Marcial was promoted to communications assistant in 1999 and to communications associate in 2000. In his present position, Marcial has a wide range of responsibilities. He primarily focuses on coordinating TCWF’s website and media databases, and provides analyses and reports on the effectiveness of TCWF’s electronic communications and public relations strategies. He also writes news releases and articles for the Foundation’s publications and website, and manages an archival library of Foundation- and grantee-produced materials.

“The grantees’ work is powerful - it enlightens me. I take pride in telling their stories,” Marcial said.

Marcial is a member of the Hispanic Public Relations Association, Public Communicators of Los Angeles, The Communications Network, California Chicano News Media Association, the American Sociological Association and the Southern California Association of Philanthropy.

Recently admitted to UCLA’s Anderson School of Business, Marcial plans to pursue an M.B.A. next fall.
