TCWF’s second statewide Teen Pregnancy Prevention Initiative Conference, held in San Diego on May 29-31, 2002, attracted 220 participants to learn about effective teen pregnancy programs. A highlight was the presentation of five “Youth for Adolescent Pregnancy” (YAPP) Leadership Recognition Awards. Rogelio Conde, Veronica Islas, Genevieve Markussen, Priscilla Padilla and Neru Taupau each received educational scholarships of up to $25,000. “Options To Reduce Crime and Violence in the Future” drew more than 200 participants to Sacramento on June 4, 2002, for a daylong discussion of violence prevention strategies. Funded by a grant from TCWF, the forum was sponsored jointly by the California Attorney General’s Office and the California Health and Human Services Agency.
TCWF grantee, Paraprofessional Healthcare Institute, published a report in June 2002 titled “Collaborating To Improve In-Home Supportive Services: Stakeholder Perspectives on Implementing California’s Public Authorities.” The report details efforts to improve the quality of care and the quality of jobs within California’s In-Home Supportive Services programs.
A new report by TCWF Program Directors Alicia Procello and Gary Nelson on TCWF’s Health Improvement Initiative is available in the evaluation section of www.tcwf.org. Titled “The California Wellness Foundation’s Health Improvement Initiative: Accomplishments, Challenges and Lessons Learned,” the report addresses TCWF’s experiences with this five-year initiative that ended in 2001.
 Two TCWF program assistants were promoted to the position of senior program assistant in June 2002. Susan Bozeman, of the Teen Pregnancy Prevention priority area, joined TCWF in 1992, and Patricia Gómez, of the Special Projects Fund, was hired in 1999. As senior program assistants, they will continue to provide administrative and programmatic support within their grantmaking areas. Bozeman has also worked in the Violence Prevention priority area at TCWF and attended California State University, Northridge. Prior to joining TCWF, Gómez worked at the Family Services Agency of San Mateo County and with the San Mateo County Head Start Program. She attended Skyline College and San Francisco State University.
NICOS Chinese Health Coalition, one of TCWF’s Children and Youth Community Health Initiative grantees, received a Rainbow Award from the Newspaper Association of America in July 2002 for its Chinese Community Problem Gambling Project advertising campaign.
Pauline Daniels has been appointed to the position of program director for the Healthy Aging priority area. Daniels previously worked in the Teenage Pregnancy Prevention priority area.
TCWF recognizes Susan Bozeman, senior program assistant, for 10 years of service and Joanne Williams, accounting manager, for five years of service.
TCWF welcomes Janet Sandoval-Angel, the new program assistant for the Diversity in the Health Professions priority area.
Gary L. Yates, TCWF president and CEO, was reelected in April 2002 to the Council on Foundations’ board of directors for a second term and will serve as treasurer as a member of the Management Committee. Yates was also elected for another term as chair of the board of directors of Grantmakers In Health.
Yates was honored in June 2002 at Women Against Gun Violence’s Courageous Leadership Brunch for his commitment to the organization’s mission to improve community health by preventing gun violence.
Alicia Procello, program director for the Diversity in the Health Professions priority area, was appointed to the board of directors of The Institute for Diversity in Health Management in April 2002. This Chicago-based organization works nationally to increase the diversity of the health care management workforce and to improve opportunities for those already in the field.
Cristina M. Regalado, program director for the Special Projects Fund, was elected to the board of directors of the Southern California Association for Philanthropy at its annual meeting in June.
