TCWF Honors Recipients of Champions of Health Professions Diversity Award
The Foundation honored José A. Arévalo, MD of Sacramento; Rolland C. Lowe, MD of San Francisco; and Patricia Pratt of Los Angeles with its 2006 Champions of Health Professions Diversity Award at a dinner on June 12, 2006. The following day, at a conference on increasing diversity in the health professions, TCWF honored Sen. Deborah Ortiz for her efforts in this issue throughout her service in public office. TCWF Funds City of Los Angeles Youth Mediation Summit
The May 11 Youth Mediation Summit, held at Los Angeles City Hall, was organized by the Office of Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa in conjunction with a number of local agencies. More than 300 youth from 13 middle and high schools attended the summit. Participants learned about the benefits of nonviolent conflict resolution. There were also a variety of workshops for parents, teachers and school administrators.
Foundation Staff Addresses Diverse Audiences
TCWF President and CEO Gary L. Yates was the 2006 Pat Brown Institute Distinguished Speaker at its California Agenda Public Policy Lecture Series on May 24. Yates spoke on developing a diverse health care workforce.
Magdalena Beltrán-del Olmo, vice president of communications, served on the panel discussion titled “Being Ahead of the Curve in Multicultural Marketing and Communications” at the Multicultural Summit 2006 in May.
David Littlefield, communications officer, was a panelist for a workshop session titled “Strategic Communications: Adding Value to Foundation Grantmaking” at the 2006 Council on Foundations conference in Pittsburgh in May.

Developed by Ogilvy Public Relations Worldwide with a grant from TCWF, Make It In Scrubs is a comprehensive website designed for youth to explore paths to employment in health care. With detailed information on more than 100 jobs or careers, educational requirements and options, financial aid and other resources, the site is a one-stop resource for California youth. Gary L. Yates, TCWF president and CEO, received the Greenlining Institute’s Big Foot award at its 13th Annual Economic Development Summit on April 20 in Los Angeles. Yates was honored for TCWF’s support of the needs of underserved communities in California.
Magdalena Beltrán-del Olmo, vice president of communications, has been appointed to the California Legislative Commission on Autism. The blue-ribbon commission will examine issues related to the early identification and intervention of autism spectrum disorders and identify gaps in programs, services, funding, education and treatment.
TCWF Board Member Barbara C. Staggers, MD, was named “Woman of the Year” for the 16th Assembly District by California State Assemblywoman Wilma Chan. A notable woman is selected annually from each California Assembly district to commemorate Women’s History Month.
TCWF received a bronze award for its website from the 2006 Wilmer Shields Rich Awards for Excellence in Communications. Communications Officer Julio Marcial accepted the award, sponsored by the Council on Foundations.

TCWF recognizes Melody Slotchin, office services coordinator, and Ruth Tebbets Brousseau, director of evaluation and organizational learning, for 10 years of service to the Foundation.
TCWF welcomes new staff: Sean Frazier, network/database administrator; Lauri Green, program assistant; and Jamie Schenker, program assistant.
